BIF/RCRA TRIAL BURN/CPT PROGRAMS
AirSource Technologies, Inc. was retained by a major national portland
cement manufacturing company to perform RCRA Trial Burn and Comprehensive
Performance Test Programs for their multiple kilns firing hazardous waste
fuels.
Some fifteen separate test programs have been conducted over a ten year
period, typically entailing sampling to determine Destruction Removal
Efficiency of principal organic hazardous constituents (POHCs), and
measurement of emissions of dioxin/furan compounds, multi-metals, HCl,
particulate, VOST, semi-volatiles, and the common CEM priority pollutant
constituents.
AirSource normally mobilizes a crew of up to 20 personnel to conduct
these trial burns often working on an around-the-clock basis to minimize the
duration of interruption to normal plant production.

SCRUBBER STUDY — CHROMIUM REMOVAL EFFICIENCY
AirSource Technologies, Inc. was retained to conduct inlet/outlet testing
of two wet scrubbers treating emissions from a battery of hard chrome
plating circuits. Employing Method 306 to optimize test precision for
determining total chromium, our crew completed the testing expeditiously
despite contending with subzero temperatures & heavy snows from a major
winter storm.

EMISSION INVESTIGATION STUDY
Our client requested a study to determine the makeup and quantity of
emissions from a variety of plant production sources. Testing included total
particulate, PM10, total hydrocarbons, and speciation of potential Hazardous
Air Pollutants (HAPs) by on-site extractive FTIR. Certain sources were also
sampled and analyzed for volatile and semi-volatile organics. Eight separate
sources were evaluated during the investigative study, which provided
process data necessary to properly design the client’s air pollution control
systems.

 |
RESEARCH INVESTIGATION AND COMPLIANCE TESTING
Working with a consultant to a consortium of charcoal production
companies, AirSource Technologies, Inc. provided technical direction and
field-testing services at a variety of locations.
This study focused on potential emissions from varying types of charcoal
kilns and briquetting facilities and involved simultaneous monitoring of
VOCs, particulate (PM10), and priority pollutant gases (CO, NOx).
AirSource led negotiations with EPA to develop test methodologies for
this difficult sample matrix. EPA technical staff observed the testing and
accepted the test results in full.

 |
INVESTIGATIVE AND COMPLIANCE TESTING OF GAS
TURBINE RETROFIT
Employing Method 20, AirSource Technologies, Inc. performed NOx testing
for a newly constructed power generating facility at a Midwestern
municipality. Twin gas turbines, converted from commercial aviation
applications, drive a common generator. Using special twenty-foot probes,
the respective stacks from the turbines were tested individually, both
initially for assessing operational performance and, again for compliance
demonstration purposes.

FACILITY WIDE VISIBLE EMISSION EVALUATION AND
NSPS PERFORMANCE TEST PROGRAM
In support of a Title V submittal project, AirSource Technologies, Inc.
conducted a facility-wide evaluation of a major limestone and portland
cement production facility. Extensive photo-documentation and Performance
Testing verification was conducted in conjunction with this program.

 |
MELTING FURNACE
AirSource Technologies, Inc. was contracted to perform a range of test
measurements for a leading aluminum casting firm operating melting furnaces
in the Midwest. In addition to an evaluation of emissions for multiple
metals, AirSource personnel monitored for particulate, and common priority
pollutants.

 |
MACT COMPLIANCE DEMONSTRATION TESTING
AirSource Technologies, Inc. was contracted to perform a range of test
measurements required by the promulgation of the Secondary Aluminum MACT
standards, on behalf of a firm specializing in smelting and casting of
recycled aluminum for manufacture of automotive parts. Testing included
measurements of Hazardous Air Pollutants for establishing Area vs. Major
Source Determinations, as well as dioxin/furan compounds associated with
chlorine emissions from fluxing operations.

Steel Industry |
 |
ROD MILL AND COOLING PEN EVALUATION
Working on behalf of a scrap steel recovery, remelting and product
fabrication firm, AirSource Technologies, Inc. conducted particulate testing
and continuous emission monitoring of a rod mill exhaust stack. In addition,
testing was performed to determine NOX emissions associated with a slow
cooling pen associated with ball mill production.
OVERALL APC SYSTEM FLOW STUDY
For this same firm, AirSource conducted an APC system flow study. This
study entailed simultaneous flow traversing and data recording associated
with a network of massive main ducts, most requiring twenty-foot probes for
test purposes. Interpolation of resultant data provided system redesign
criteria, which ultimately resulted in substantial improvement in system
performance.

HOSPITAL WASTE INCINERATOR
The disposal and incineration of hospital infectious and other waste is
carefully regulated. AirSource Technologies, Inc. has worked with a large
Midwestern hospital providing comprehensive services to demonstrate ongoing
compliance with city/county air regulations. These annual tests routinely
involve testing for metals, particulate, HCl, dioxins/furans, and typical
continuous emission monitoring constituents.
On behalf of our client AirSource appealed to the regulatory agency to
reduce these costly test burdens and were successful.

RECOVERY SYSTEM/AFTERBURNER VOC SPECIATION
In order to demonstrate compliance control of a VOC recovery/afterburner
installation, AirSource conducted on-site GC speciation of VOC constituents
by Method 18 collecting samples continuously around-the-clock in large
vacuum canisters. Samples were then analyzed "Real Time" by field
chromatographers.

STEAM POWER PLANT AIR LEAKAGE STUDY
In order to evaluate overall plant and control system performance, this
utility retained AirSource Technologies, Inc. to conduct detailed
measurements of volumetric flow, oxygen, and carbon dioxide levels in huge
main ducts in the Economizer Outlet, Air Heater Inlet, and Exhaust Stack
locations.
Using twenty-foot sampling probes equipped with CEM sample connections
and Pitot measurement lines, the AirSource crew traversed these ducts and
stacks, while continuously recording the determined concentrations of each
parameter.

NSPS NEW FACILITY COMPLIANCE DEMONSTRATION
Following construction of one of the largest automobile battery
manufacturing facilities in the nation, AirSource was retained to provide
compliance test services specifically targeting lead emissions. Working from
a very strict protocol requiring extensive blank train evaluations due to a
history of contamination problems inherent with battery plant testing,
AirSource tested some twelve different process sources with all runs
"passing" and with no detectable background contamination.

VOC ABATEMENT SYSTEM COMPLIANCE DEMONSTRATION
AirSource was retained to conduct a system-wide simultaneous evaluation
of VOC emissions and Destruction and Removal Efficiency of a Thermal
Oxidizer. Using five FID detectors, we measured two process inlet streams
entering a dual carbon concentrator system. We then measured two
concentrator outlet locations feeding a Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO),
and the stack exit from the RTO.
The precision and repeatability of the test runs allowed our client to
file a permit modification changing this facility from an Intermediate
Source to a Deminimus Source with substantial cost savings and elimination
of much of their regulatory reporting requirements.

 |
LIME KILN EXHAUST EMISSION INVESTIGATIVE STUDY
AirSource was retained by one of the country’s leading lime producers to
assist them in evaluating the effects of kiln/scrubber operating conditions
on particulate and gaseous emissions.
A systematic test plan was developed wherein our client made specified
adjustments to kiln and scrubber operating parameters while corresponding
testing was taking place. Using proprietary techniques, AirSource provided
"real-time" particulate results. We then integrated test data with process
data to develop meaningful correlative information.
